Need an Escape? The Top Safest Outdoor Getaways During COVID

5 of the Best Social Distancing Getaways During COVID

Let’s face it, 2020 has been a whirlwind of a year! With the ongoing global pandemic forcing many people to change their vacation plans, you may find yourself searching for a way to get away from it all and recharge your mind, body, and soul. Continue reading to discover five of the best social distancing getaways to consider as you plan a safe escape during the COVID pandemic.

1. Hit the Hiking Trails

Spending time surrounded by nature is one of the most beneficial ways to disconnect from the current events and improve your mental health. Not only that but being outdoors makes it possible to easily follow the social distancing guidelines to stay safe.

The Blue Ridge Mountains are home to some of the most spectacular state parks in the southeastern part of the country. Here, hikers have access to hundreds of miles of hiking trails that lead to spectacular views of the surrounding mountain peaks. Many of the parks have trails with varying levels of difficulty, along with mountain biking trails. During the winter months, the hiking trails are even less crowded, making them ideal social distancing getaways.

2. Play a Round at a Golf Resort

If you are a golf enthusiast looking to vacation during COVID, why not plan a trip to a high-end golf resort? These exceptional resorts can provide you with a fun challenge while being surrounded by some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country. Not to mention the abundance of luxurious amenities, such as private pro shops, fine-dining venues, or spa and wellness facilities.

One of our favorites in the Carolinas is the Kiawah Island Golf Resort. This seaside resort is home to two courses designed by a couple of the most well-known names in the sport –– Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player. There are also other golf courses to play on the property, each showcasing the island’s diverse scenery and offering distinct challenges along 18-holes. Kiawah Island also is home to the acclaimed Ocean Course, which has played host to the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup

Another well-known golf resort that makes a wonderful social distancing getaway is the Pinehurst Resort. Known for the Carolina pine trees that frame the grounds, this historic course is located in North Carolina. With nine courses to choose from, your skills are sure to be put to the test during your visit to the resort.

The Golf Experience at The Cliffs

Our premier golf experience is characterized by not one, but seven pristine golf courses, designed by some of the greatest players and golf architects the sport has ever seen.

One day you could be playing along the shores of the magnificent Lake Keowee and the next, on the peak of Glassy Mountain –– creating an experience unlike any other.

3. Take a Road Trip

There’s never been a better time to get behind the wheel and take a road trip. Whether it’s a short day trip or a weekend getaway, a road trip is a safe way to travel during the pandemic.

Cruise down America’s favorite drive, the historic Blue Ridge Parkway. Along the way, you can stop at the numerous viewpoints and appreciate the splendor of the Appalachian mountains. Another perk of taking a road trip on the parkway are the charming mountain towns that are scattered throughout. These towns are the perfect place to grab a bite to eat before continuing on your way.

4. Visit a Winery

Sometimes the only thing you need to unwind is to sip on a good glass of wine. If you’re a wine lover, plan a social distancing getaway and stay at a local winery. During your visit, you can learn all about the winemaking process, tour the vineyards and grounds, and taste many of the different wines made on-site.

Along the Blue Ridge Mountains, there are a number of wineries to choose from. One of the most well-known being the Biltmore Estate Winery just outside of downtown Asheville. Producing more than 20 handcrafted vintages, you’ll have plenty of award-winning wines to taste on your visit.

Another option is the Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards, located near Hendersonville. They offer nearly 30 varieties of both wine and hard cider to try and a private Airbnb experience. Given the limited capacity of many venues, if you plan on staying overnight, you may need to reserve your social distancing getaways far in advance.

5. Rent a Mountain or Lakefront Cabin

If you want to avoid busy hotels and crowded resorts altogether, renting a private home for a weekend is another option to enjoy vacationing during COVID. Whether you’re looking for a mountain cabin tucked away in the forest or a secluded lakefront cottage along a sandy beach, you can find one-of-a-kind properties to escape to using platforms such as Airbnb or Glamping Hub

Near Asheville, there are numerous glamping properties, including magical treehouses and romantic glamping domes, that upgrade your outdoor experience. Another popular destination in the Carolinas is Lake Lure, with lots of secluded options that help you stay away from the crowds.
