Fall Golf Guide: Everything You Need to Know

5 Tips for Fall Golfing in the Blue Ridge Mountains

Fall golfing is an exciting time for players, especially in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. As the lush greenery takes on a new, colorful look, the design of the course is also transformed –– making the playing experience feel fresh and enjoyable for players.

To make the most of the sport during this season, it is important to have the appropriate gear and equipment to truly enjoy your time on the course. Take a look at our all-encompassing guide to make golfing this season an enjoyable time, each and every time.

1. Layer Up

Whenever cool, crisp air fills the days, you know it’s time to bring out your fall wardrobe! One of the best ways to stay warm and protected from the elements during fall golfing is to layer up. We recommend wearing a base layer that fits under your shirt and pants. This will keep warm air close to the body, keeping you comfortable even on the coldest fall days. Another functional way to enjoy being out on the course on chilly days is to wear a vest. This allows you to swing freely, without getting cold.

You may even want to consider bringing hand warmers and a pair of gloves for the cooler days, as stiff, cold hands can significantly impact your grip and swing. Additionally, consider wearing two pairs of socks to keep your feet warm as you make your way through the course. In the Blue Ridge Mountains, the temperature can unexpectedly drop, so keeping a few extra layers in your bag can keep you prepared for any situation.

2. Walk the Course

With the right gear on, you can easily spend more time on the course –– making it the perfect opportunity to walk the course. At this time of the year, the natural beauty of the course is exemplified. So, if you feel up to it, walking the course is one of the best ways to experience this beauty –– and keep fit of course!

At The Cliffs, our seven golf courses each offer a magnificent walking experience for players that meander along babbling streams, sandy lake shores, and soaring mountain peaks. But, walking the course is only the beginning of our fall golfing experience ––  our communities boast private instructors, state-of-the-art training areas, locker rooms, golf social clubs, and so much more! 3. Play with a Softer Ball

During the cooler autumn months, the ball you play with can significantly impact your game. Given the denser cold air, a harder ball will require a faster swing speed. The softer ball will also compress more easily, adding both distance and touch to your game.

4. Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated while on the golf course is always important –– yet, fall golfing requires more deliberate action from players as dehydration is harder to detect. One reason is the cooler air contributes to dehydration since you don’t feel as thirsty. We recommend keeping an extra water bottle or electrolyte drink in your bag to make sure you keep your body hydrated and in top condition while you play.

5. Work on a Weakness

During the fall months, competition begins to dwindle down, making it the perfect time to work on the various areas of your game you can improve. Identify one or two weaknesses of your game to focus on and crafta plan to develop this skill in the autumn months, as well as into the off-season.

At The Cliffs, members are encouraged to utilize this time and sign up for private lessons to learn from the trained professionals at your club. This will allow you to form good habits, improve various areas of your game, and be prepared for peak competition season the following year.
