Continue reading to learn about his inspiration for the design and the distinguishing features players can find as they make their way along all 18 holes.

Jack Nicklaus’ Playing Career

Recognized in the golf community as one of the greatest professional players of all time, Jack Nicklaus has quite an impressive career. Known as the “Golden Bear” due to his blonde hair and burly physique, Nicklaus left his mark on the sport of golf both as a player and designer.

He began playing professionally at a young age, winning his first national event at the age of 17. Throughout his career, Nicklaus won 117 professional events, 18 of which were majors –– the most of any professional player in history.

Professional Player Turned Course Architect

Jack Nicklaus’ legacy extends far beyond his golf career. After realizing his passion for designing golf courses, Nicklaus began developing his business. Using a Golden Bear logo, his business expands into many different areas, including golf course design. He says “golf course design was an opportunity to put what I’ve been through, seen, played and loved on a piece of ground.”

Over the years, Nicklaus Design has completed more than 425 spectacular courses in more than 45 countries. By using his experiences as a player as inspiration, Nicklaus is able to create courses that require strategy while being visually appealing from each hole. Taking advantage of long-range views, he uses the raw beauty of the land to create an experience unlike any other.

When asked about his philosophy for the course at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove, he says, “I don’t think I can define a philosophy. I think every property deserves its own.” And upon playing the course, you quickly realize that the design requires you to think outside the box to overcome obstacles on every hole.

Walk The Courses

Now that we know a little more about the mastermind behind the design, let’s take a look at a few of the most memorable holes at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove golf course

No. 1: Par 4 – 455 yards

With the highest point on the course –– offering a view of five holes and a spring-fed stream –– the first hole of the course is both challenging and captivating. Starting with an elevated opening tee shot, the hole can play more than 450 yards uphill, proving quite tricky for players.

No. 3: Par 4 – 400 yards

The shortest par 4 of the course presents players with some challenges, regardless of their skill levels. With bunkers to the right, and a noticeable ridge and sloping sides below the green, the course sets the bar high right from the start.

No. 7: Par 4 – 461 yards

Rated the most difficult par 4 at Walnut Cove, players are tasked to play around bunkers and streams to come out on top at this tricky hole.

No. 11: Par 3 – 246 yards

Described by Nicklaus as “a man-sized par 3 that looks like it has been there forever”, players are surrounded by lush mountain peaks as they begin to make their way into the most forested portion in the course.

No. 16: Par 3 – 196 yards

Known as the easiest hole of the design, this hole makes a hole-in-one feel like a real possibility. Keep your concentration, and use this hole to your advantage to lower your score.

No. 18: Par 4 – 474 yards

The final hole of the course is the fourth most difficult of the design. If players want a fighting chance, avoid the stream running along the left side of the sloping fairway.
