Ranking the Top Five Ski Resorts
1. Sugar Mountain Resort
As North Carolina’s largest ski area with the most vertical, Sugar Mountain Resort takes our top spot. With diverse terrain, advanced runs for experienced skiers, and 1,200 feet vertical, Sugar Mountain is comparable to medium-sized western resorts.
The resort’s opening date is typically around mid-November, and its closing date is historically at the end of March. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is about a 2-hour drive from Sugar Mountain, making it easily accessible.
2. Beech Mountain
Coming in second is Beech Mountain—the highest ski resort in the East, with a summit of 5,505 feet. With 17 well-maintained runs, this mountain is great for beginners and experts alike. The mountain also has excellent snowmaking and grooming, meaning the conditions are usually preferable.
Top-notch lighting provides great night skiing, and the upgraded chairlifts keep skiers moving, so there are rarely lines. At the mountaintop, you can enjoy drinks at the glass roundhouse sky bar. If you’re looking for other fun winter activities, there is also a tubing park and skating rink on the property. Beech Mountain typically opens at the end of November and closes mid-March.

3. Cataloochee
Nestled near Maggie Valley, Cataloochee Ski Area is known for its early openings and breathtaking views of the Great Smoky Mountains. Its proximity to Asheville and Charlotte makes it a convenient choice for a quick getaway.
All 18 runs at Cataloochee feature lighting and snowmaking, and free skiing is offered for seniors. The quaint nearby town of Maggie Valley offers lodging and dining options. Cataloochee is typically open from mid-November to March 1st.
The ski resort’s accessibility can mean larger crowds, especially since it has only 50 acres of skiable terrain. Additionally, like all of the resorts on this list, the weather can be variable, meaning snow conditions can be impacted.
4. Appalachian Ski Mountain
Appalachian Ski Mountain is the closest ski resort to major metropolitan areas, making it the most accessible. With affordable prices and a welcoming atmosphere, this resort is family-friendly and perfect for beginners looking to improve. The 27 acres of skiable area means that novices aren’t overwhelmed by too much terrain.
Conveniently located near Blowing Rock, it offers easy access to lodging and dining. The ski season runs from mid-November through mid-March. Experienced skiers may find the terrain too limited for their preferences.
5. Hatley Pointe
Formerly known as Wolf Ridge, Hatley Pointe is the closest ski resort to Asheville. Its cozy trails and family-friendly environment make it a hidden gem for those seeking a quieter mountain getaway.
Hatley Pointe typically has the shortest season in the area and only operates for a little over two months, from late December to late February. The resort also has limited amenities, requiring trips to Asheville for dining and nightlife. Fortunately, Asheville is a fantastic town that offers entertainment for you and your family after a fun day on the mountain.
