8 Bathroom Design Trends to Include in Your Mountain Home

As you get ready in the morning, or relax after a long day at the office with a long bath, the bathroom will likely be one of the most used rooms in the house. When designing your mountain home bathroom, you want to create a space that mirrors feelings of serenity that you would find in a luxury mountain spa. 

While bathrooms are typically one of the smaller rooms in a home, they provide many opportunities to incorporate luxurious design elements into the space. Whether you’re building your dream mountain home, or looking to renovate your current bathroom, use these eight design trends to accentuate the natural beauty of your mountain home bathroom. 

1. Natural Color Scheme

First, let’s talk about color! Choosing a color palette plays an important role in creating the right atmosphere in your bathroom. Typically, it is best to choose a natural color scheme, or one that uses deep, warm neutral colors in most of the space. For example, incorporate earthy colors, such as rich browns and blue-grays into the color scheme, as they can sync with the beauty of the mountains. When it comes to accent colors, choose pale shades of blue, teal or green in your bathroom, as they help maintain a relaxing ambiance in the space.

2. Rustic Elements

When designing any room in a mountain home, try to incorporate rustic elements to emphasize the rugged, natural beauty of the outdoors. Incorporating rustic features,  it will help unify the outdoor charm of mountain life within your indoor space.

In your bathroom, you can use hand-crafted wood vanities, shelves or window frames to add a natural element to the design. You can even use ceramic tiles with wood grain patterns as flooring which will create the look and feel of wood without having to worry about water damage over time. Additionally, stone is another rustic option to add to your bathroom’s design. Consider using it as the material for the tile in your shower, floor or on an accent wall. 

3. Natural Light

Natural light in a bathroom is a wonderful way to make a smaller room appear more spacious. To utilize this design method, use large windows to allow natural light to pour into the space while framing the marvelous mountain views. 

If your windows are small, talk to your home builder about the possibility of incorporating a skylight window in your bathroom. These “roof windows” allow for three times more light to enter a room than a vertical window. Also, opt for large mirrors in your bathroom, as they bounce the light around the room, creating the illusion of even more natural light.

4. Unique Tile 

As mentioned previously, tile can be used to add rustic charm to your mountain bathroom. Tile comes in many distinct colors, shapes, sizes and materials, making it one of the most versatile design elements you can use in your bathroom. 

When choosing your tile, make sure that it fits within the color scheme you have chosen. It is also important to consider the impact of different finishes. For instance, a shiny tile will create a different effect than a matte finish will. You can also get creative with the color of the grout you choose and the amount of space between tiles.

If you want to make the space feel even larger than it is, use large tiles on the floors or in the shower area –– which also adds a touch of luxury. Consider using organic shapes to mimic the shapes found naturally outdoors, such as geometric hexagons, polygons or flowers. 

5. Metal Fixtures and Hardware 

Another way to create a rustic feel is to use metal fixtures and hardware. Warm metals, such as brass, bronze, copper or gold add a luxurious feel whileblack finishes on hardware and light fixtures have been all the rage recently. Both of these elements can add a touch of sophistication and modernity to your mountain bathroom. The key to creating a unified bathroom design is to stay consistent with the finish you choose throughout the space. 

6. Freestanding Tub

If you want to create a bathroom space that feels like a spa, consider a freestanding soaking tub. Not only will it become the statement piece of your luxury bathroom, but it will also showcase the large size of the room.

If you have a smaller bathroom space, there are appropriately-sized options available, such as Japanese soaking tubs. These small tubs come in various finishes and add to the spa-like experience in your new bathroom. 

7. Walk-in Shower with Glass Walls

To update your walk-in shower, consider using glass walls. With the sheer glass, this design element keeps the bathroom feeling grand and open. When designing your shower, you may also want to remove the threshold to add a sleek look to the design.

8. Add Technology

Did you know you can now incorporate technology into your bathroom design? Smart mirrors are the perfect addition to your bathrooms as they are multi-functional.  These devices allow you to conveniently watch the news or check your email, all while getting ready in the morning. You can also incorporate innovative technology in the shower area through speakers to play music and voice-controlled devices built into your bathroom.
