Have you resolved to learn something new this New Year? The Cliffs Insight Series is a complimentary speaker symposium series gathering experts from across the region to delight and enlighten members across our seven club communities.
This month, you’ll have the opportunity to learn more about your dog’s behavior from a veteran veterinarian, revel in the words of poet Carl Sandburg and explore the history of moonshining here in the “Dark Corner.”

Think Like Your Dog!

Why does Fido understand certain requests and seem oblivious to others? Dr. Carolyn Apker, veteran Veterinarian has the answer to this question and more. She will show the differences between human and dog thought and what our pets do and don’t understand when we communicate with them.

Carl Sandburg completed a literary career that captured and recorded America’s traditions, struggles, and dreams. From the Carl Sandburg Home in Flat Rock, NC, Education Program Coordinator Ginger Hollingsworth-Cox will share some of Carl Sandburg’s words and works to illuminate the life of “The People’s Poet.”
An Adventure in Nepal with Jacey Bergman & Command Sgt Major Gretchen Evans

Accomplished Asheville teen, Jacey Bergman will tell her adventurous story of travelling with the No Barriers Youth Explore Nepal program. Jacey will share how she and others pushed their boundaries while on the trip of a lifetime. Her No Barriers trip chaperone, Command Sergeant Major Gretchen Evans, U.S. Army will join her in the discussion.
Old Hickory Division at Camp Sevier
Monday, January 21 | 5:30 – 6:30 pm | Valley Clubhouse
On September 29, 1918 the U. S. Army 30th “Old Hickory” Division broke through Germany’s Hindenburg Line, which lead to the end of WWI. These remarkable young men began their training in Greenville, South Carolina at Camp Sevier. Join author, Citadel graduate and former U.S. Navy pilot, Don Koonce as he tells this fascinating story of historical importance.
A History of Moonshining in the Dark Corner

Since early in the 19th century, extreme northeastern Greenville County, especially, Glassy and Hogback Mountain, has been known as the Dark Corner. Author and speaker Jim Stehlik will tell the fascinating story of moonshining there.
