During peak season for fall leaves in N.C., the leaves begin to change into vibrant and cozy shades of orange, yellow, and red. For members of The Cliffs, this means we soon will be surrounded by rolling mountain peaks embellished with colorful foliage — and we couldn’t be more excited!

Our communities at The Cliffs are not only some of the greatest places to live in Western North and Upstate South Carolina, but they are also some of the best sites to see enchanting fall foliage. Located among the Blue Ridge Mountains, we are fortunate to experience fall colors amid stunning landscapes that some travel from all over to see. You haven’t experienced a Carolina fall until you’ve seen the leaves at their peak. Discover some of the best sites to witness fall foliage in the Carolinas below.

1. Rough Ridge

Situated within the vast Pisgah National Forest, experience breathtaking mountain views from the climb up Rough Ridge Trail. Rough Ridge is an early leaf-peeping destination as the hues of fall come out within late September and early October.

As you hike the trail, take in the scenery of other surrounding areas including those of Grandfather Mountain, Linn Cove Viaduct, and even the Piedmont. Continue climbing for another half mile to the crest of Rough Ridge as the views only get better the farther you hike. Up towards the top, there are many large boulders that you may sit upon to take a break from the long walk and soak in the scenery.

2. Grandfather Mountain

Located 75 miles north of Asheville just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, Grandfather Mountain is a popular destination many people travel to at the beginning of the peak leaf season. Due to its soaring heights, there are many ways to take in the majestic autumn scenery.

Grandfather Mountain, at an elevation of 5,946 feet, is considered to be one of the world’s most diversified nature preserves. With its several hiking paths, the mountain offers more challenging terrain and panoramic views from its rocky peak. If you simply wish to take in the views rather than hike, the top of the legendary Mile-High Swinging Bridge can be driven to and offers fantastic mountain sights.

3. Beech Mountain

Another area known for the peak season for fall leaves in N.C. is Beech Mountain. It stands at the highest elevation compared to any other town in the Eastern U.S. at a height of 5,506 feet. Its fall foliage begins to appear by the first week of October and only grows more vibrant through peak season.

There are several mountain routes, including the creekside Falls Trail, which leads to a magnificent waterfall. As you go through Beech Mountain, you can expect to come across a kaleidoscope of vivid oranges, reds, and purples. If these views weren’t enough for you, venture a bit further south to the Waterrock Knob and Black Balsam regions for more colorful landscapes.

4. Mount Pisgah

Even more spectacular scenery may be seen only 26 miles southwest of downtown Asheville at Mount Pisgah. Around the second week of October, the top of a 5,721-foot peak will provide lovely views of the natural fall splendor.

Mount Pisgah is a traveler’s dream destination due to its astounding vistas, nature paths, campgrounds, and so much more. For these reasons, Mount Pisgah has been a beloved mountain hideaway for years. If you can’t get enough of the colorful autumn leaves in one day, you may camp overnight at the Blue Ridge Parkway’s highest, coolest, and most private campground.

5. Lake Lure

A quaint mountain town in Rutherford County, Lake Lure can be found at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. In early November, you can see the sweeping foliage as it reflects on the surface of the lake’s waters.

As you drive through towering mountains, roaring rivers and the tranquil lake are visible as soon as you enter the downtown area. There are many ways to enjoy the fall foliage including kayaking or canoeing, mountain biking on the trails, or climbing on the rocks that surround Lake Lure. If you wish to explore more, take a quick adventure to the nearby town of Chimney Rock as it offers spectacular views of the summit.

6. South Mountains State Park

The South Mountains are situated 70 miles from Asheville and close to the picturesque town of Morganton, NC. The fall leaves are at their most colorful between late October and early November, making this the best time to visit this mountain sanctuary.

This nature preserve is referred to as the jewel among North Carolina state parks as it is one of the state’s most scenic forests. With more than 40 walking trails, an altitude of 3,000 feet, and a cascading waterfall that plunges 60 feet, you will be in awe of the nature that surrounds you. From equestrian camping and trout fishing to mountain biking and wildflower picking, there are many ways to appreciate the great outdoors. With so much to explore, you will want to ensure you see all the park has to offer.
