New Year, New General Manager:
Meet Gayle Starke

As Walnut Cove’s new General Manager, Gayle Starke brings an inspiring combination of professional experience, personal dedication, and a passion for creating exceptional member experiences. We sat down with Gayle to learn more about her journey, her vision for Walnut Cove, and what inspires her as she steps into this new role.

Background and Experience

What were some of the most rewarding moments from your time as Clubhouse Manager at Walnut Cove?
The most rewarding moments have been seeing my colleagues progress in their careers through internal promotions at Walnut Cove. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see team members grow and succeed. My favorite memory would be any night when The Tavern is full and buzzing with energy from the staff and members alike. It’s why I do what I do!

Can you tell us about your professional background before joining The Cliffs?

I have a somewhat unusual background considering where I am today! Growing up as a dancer in Scotland, I had big dreams and even bigger ambitions. I’m one of the lucky ones who checked a lot of my bucket list items off at a young age. Through my time as a professional dancer and with the Walt Disney Company, I was exposed to world-class performance and hospitality. The dance world is extremely tough and competitive—you must be at the top of your game 24/7. I attribute my drive, work ethic, and achievements to my dance teachers and the professionalism they instilled in me from a young age.

What initially inspired you to pursue a career in hospitality and club management?

After dipping my toes into the hospitality world as a performer and Cast Member at Walt Disney World, I became fascinated by the opportunity to directly communicate with and impact the guest experience. Performing for thousands of people versus interacting one-on-one with guests are worlds apart, but I loved how it felt to make magic and see their reactions in real time. The club world is strikingly similar to show business. As a club, we put on a show every day, whether it’s a lunch service or dinner and fireworks for 100+. Every time, there’s an opportunity to create an unforgettable experience. Pretty neat!

What excites you most about stepping into the General Manager role?

I love to learn and to help people, and this role allows me to do both all day, every day. Supporting the amazing team at Walnut Cove is an honor. I’m excited to grow alongside the staff, collaborate across departments, and continue elevating the experience for both members and staff.

Operational Excellence

How do you balance maintaining the club’s traditions with introducing innovative changes?
Having a deep understanding of the Club’s history is so very important when looking to the future. We are so fortunate to have multiple tenured staff who offer valuable insights. The recent Harvest Bonfire Bash is a perfect example of what happens when the whole team collaborates. By blending what has worked in the past with new ideas, we create events that honor traditions while moving forward.

This year, we’re especially excited to celebrate Walnut Cove’s 20th anniversary. It’s a testament to the incredible foundation built by our team and members over the years. We’ll be honoring this milestone with events and experiences that showcase the rich history of the club while looking forward to a bright future.

Community Involvement

What role do you envision Walnut Cove playing in the local community?
We have a staff of 100 employees, many from the local area, and it’s a privilege to see the opportunities The Cliffs provides as an employer. The company’s commitment to education and investing in staff development is remarkable. Although I’m not a local myself, my career at The Cliffs reflects their dedication to internal growth. Walnut Cove offers endless opportunities, not just for members and staff, but for the community as a whole.

Personal Insights

What initially drew you to The Cliffs, and what has kept you motivated and inspired over the years?
I first heard of The Cliffs through my friend and colleague Mike Steele, who became the Director of Golf. I was intrigued, and when I drove through the gates for my interview, it felt like a homecoming. Seeing the Tavern brought back memories of Scotland—I knew this was the place for me. What’s kept me motivated is the constant challenge and support for growth. The Cliffs’ commitment to education and innovation inspires me to keep striving for excellence every day.

What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of work that help you recharge?
Anyone who knows me knows I’m mad about dogs—seriously, we don’t deserve them! Spending time at home with my husband Dave, a disabled veteran, and our senior rescue dog Bear is one of my favorite ways to relax. And any chance I get to return to Scotland is the ultimate recharge. There’s truly no place like it.

Who or what has been the greatest influence on your professional journey?
Without a doubt, my childhood dance teacher Sharon Gill. The discipline, passion, and attention to detail she instilled in me have been invaluable. The dance studio may seem far removed from club management, but the lessons I learned there—about perseverance and striving for perfection—apply every day. My husband David has also been an incredible support and inspiration. He’s my biggest cheerleader and the reason I’ve taken bold steps in my private club career.

Thank you, Gayle, for sharing your story and vision! We’re thrilled to see you step into this new role and continue making Walnut Cove a vibrant and welcoming community for members and staff alike.
