6 Things To Do on Lake Keowee
Lakefront living is a dream for many. Close proximity to a lake provides many of the same benefits as oceanfront living — gorgeous views, quick access to nature, and countless things to do as a family.
See the many ways you can enjoy a day on Lake Keowee, and why our community members love spending their time on the water.
1. Jump Right In
Go for a swim and jump right into the dazzling waters of Lake Keowee. Lake Keowee is renowned for its clean, emerald green water that provides a fun and safe place to play. Covering roughly 28 square miles, this large lake has so much to offer.
Plus, the mild climate of upstate South Carolina makes the water that much easier to want to jump into. The lake’s temperature tends to stay around 70 to 75 degrees throughout most of the year.
2. Chase Waterfalls
At the very top of Lake Keowee is Twin Falls, or Eastatoe Falls. This seventy-five-foot tall waterfall flows into a river that then spills into the lake. From the trail head, it’s just a fifteen minute walk accompanied with beautiful views. The water of the falls comes directly from the mountain, so bathing in them is incredible.
Party Cove is another natural waterfall and is accessible by boat. Clear and vibrant, the water is mesmerizing as it cascades down the large boulders into the lake. Anchor your boat and play in the waterfall or an unforgettable day of exploring South Carolina’s beauty.
3. Make Some Waves
Now’s the time to take the boat out and ride across the expansive lake. The many coves make Lake Keowee ideal for motor water sports such as wakesurfing, wakeboarding, and water skiing. The long channels and numerous inlets hinder the wake from other boats, as opposed to an open, wide lake where large waves can build.
4. Paddle Around
The smooth waters of Lake Keowee are also great for paddling along in a kayak, canoe, or atop a paddleboard. Take in your surroundings from the water as you meander along miles and miles of shoreline covered with native trees. Not just a great way to sightsee, but a good workout, too!
5. Explore the Land
As a mountain lake sitting at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, there are plenty of hiking trails if you feel like exploring on foot. Stay dry and hike along the extensive trails that wind through the forest and often meet the water’s edge.
6. Get to Know the Wildlife
Look out at the vast water and land to see what wildlife decides to make an appearance. Local fauna here varies from rainbow trout and heron, to salamanders and foxes, the area is teeming with wildlife.
The crystal clear water also makes for excellent fishing, so be sure to bring your fishing pole the next time you are out on your boat!
